A big part of what makes our hosting "serious" is the technology we use to make it all work. Modevia is more than some old desktop-turned-server in someone's closet. We run a stable, professional hosting environment well-suited to developers and businesses of all sizes.

We currently operate two servers completely dedicated to hosting. Our primary server handles our largely automated shared hosting environment and all mail services for the Modevia network. Our secondary server is currently used for a number of unique hosting configurations, for Modevia internal development, and to provide space to popular open source projects Feed2JS and Inkscape.
When we started Modevia in 2002, we were wholly unsatisfied with the quality of the pre-fab hosting control panels that existed at the time. That led us to develop MOPA, the Modevia control panel. The MOPA project was led by Jeff DeFouw, an exceptional developer and systems administrator with years of experience in the hosting industry.
In its earliest stages, MOPA allowed our users to manage their domains, mailboxes, databases, and contact information through a simple web interface. Since then MOPA has grown in to a robust application that provides services to Modevia users and staff alike — from invoicing to DNS zone updates to automated configuration of popular web software.
MOPA isn't everything though. It's just one of the many pieces of software that makes Modevia possible. We also use RedHat Enterprise Linux, Debian GNU/Linux, the Apache HTTP server, the MySQL and PostgreSQL database systems, and a wide variety of other applications. You may notice a common element in these: that they are primarily open source systems.
We use these systems because they work well — but more importantly because we support the ideology behind open source. We try to support the open source community in as many ways as we can — by making informed choices about what software we use, by making code contributions, by educating our users and fostering discussion, and by donating resources to software projects.
Modevia is our livelihood, so it's important to us that our services operate reliably. We understand that what you entrust to us is equally important to you. That's why our servers are monitored at two levels. Each server is monitored within its respective data center by the data center technicians. These technicians are available 24 hours per day to respond to hardware failure immediately. In addition, our servers are all monitored from a network of 10 worldwide monitoring stations by a third-party vendor.
